Basslines are the 2nd layer in making a beat come together.

A bassline is used in many genres and styles music. Funk, blues, jazz, hip hop, rap and electronic music all have basslines as an integral section of their musical composition. They are low pitched instrumentals made by the rhythm section instruments such as the keyboard (synthesizer, organs and piano), double bass and electric bass.

Basslines are generally played with the lower notes of an instrument whereas the melody and instrumentals are generally played with the upper and middle notes.

Riffs or grooves are often used today in music. These musical phrases are normally simple in structure and appealing to the ear. They are repeated throughout the entire song but with a certain amount of variation.

Bassline riffs usually emphasize the chord tones of each chord (usually the root note, the third note, the fifth note, and the octave of a chord), which helps to define a song’s key. At the same time, basslines work along with the drum part and the other rhythm instruments to create a clear rhythmic pulse.

Use these three components and start mixing and keep on experimenting and practicing and you will come up with some killer beats.
