Instrumentals are the 3rd layer in making a beat come together.
There are many instrumentals that can be used to compliment the overall sound of a composition. Depending on the style and genre of music, different instrumentals are used.
For instance, with R&B and hip hop, all types of instruments can be used but they generally include the guitar, piano, saxophone, trombone and flute.
Irish folk will use many instrumentals but the common ones are the fiddle, flutes, harps, harmonica, banjo and bouzouki.
House music will include instrumentals such as synthesizer, electronic drums, electronic effects, funk and pop samples.
There is literally an endless amount of instrumentals that can be used and I could go into a lot of depth about them but the bottom line is, that to make a great beat, if you use the 3 components, drums, basslines and instrumentals you won’t go far wrong.
Use these three components and start mixing and keep on experimenting and practicing and you will come up with some killer beats.
